Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common gynaecological/endocrine disorder that
affects 5%–10% of women of reproductive age. Its association with psychiatric conditions
is well known. This study aimed to evaluate personality, temperamental, and stress-related
characteristics among PCOS patients by comparing them with a control group. We found
that PCOS patients presented more pronounced features of type D personality and had
higher NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO FFI) scores on neuroticism and lower NEO FFI
scores on openness to experience and conscientiousness. On the Polish version of the
Emotionality Activity Sociability Temperament Survey (EAS-D), PCOS patients reported
higher emotionality-fear and lower activity than controls. The PCOS group also had
higher scores on state anxiety and trait anxiety, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory
(STAI) and Distressed Personality Scale (DS-14) questionnaires. These findings underline
the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the care of PCOS patients.
Résumé
Le syndrome des ovaires polykystiques (SOPK) est un trouble gynécologique et endocrinien
qui touche 5 à 10 % des femmes en âge de procréer. Son lien avec certains troubles
psychiatriques est bien connu. Cette étude visait à évaluer les caractéristiques concernant
la personnalité, le tempérament et le stress chez les patientes atteintes du SOPK
par comparaison avec un groupe témoin. Nous avons observé que les patientes atteintes
du SOPK manifestent des traits de la personnalité de type D plus prononcés et ont
des scores à l’inventaire en cinq facteurs NEO (NEO FFI) plus élevés pour le névrosisme
et plus faibles pour l’ouverture à l’expérience et le caractère consciencieux. Dans
la version en polonais du questionnaire émotionalité, activité et sociabilité (EAS-D),
les patientes atteintes du SOPK ont rapporté un score d’émotionalité plus élevé pour
la peur et un score d’activité plus faible comparativement au groupe témoin. Le groupe
SOPK a aussi obtenu des scores plus élevés pour l’état et les traits anxieux selon
l’inventaire d’anxiété situationnelle et habituelle (STAI) et l’échelle de la personnalité
de type D (DS-14). Ces conclusions soulignent l’importance de l’approche multidisciplinaire
dans la prestation de soins aux patientes atteintes du SOPK.
